Certified Organic
All of our coffees are Certified Organic by USDA and OTCO (Oregon Tilth). Certified Organic means the coffee is grown without synthetic pesticides and fertilizers. But high-quality organic is more about what’s put in than what’s left out.
Organic farmers work to develop a deep, rich topsoil by creating mulch out of the coffee cherry pulp. Adding other nitrogen-rich elements to it, they turn it for a full year to create a compost to spread around the base of the trees. This allows the plants to develop a longer root structure, improving moisture content, reducing soil erosion, and resulting in a clean taste.
Regeneratively Grown
Regenerative agriculture refers to a system of farming practices that enriches soils, increases biodiversity, improves watersheds, and
restores the ecosystem the crop is grown in. It also notably helps combat climate change through carbon sequestration, a biological process that captures and stores atmospheric carbon in soil.
True regenerative and organic farming practices have long been championed by the organic farmers we partner with. The environmental benefits – and the resulting clean, incredible taste of the coffee beans – are why we’ve
sourced regeneratively grown organic coffee for over 25 years. Learn More
Ethically Sourced
Here at Jim’s, ethical sourcing is a commitment that we break down into three fundamental principles.
First, our approach to ethical sourcing is rooted in our long-term relationships with our farmers. Jim has visited most of our single origin farms and continues to foster partnerships with our growers, some of which go back two decades! We also strive to improve the lives of coffee farmers in and around areas where our coffee is grown by partnering with small charities.
Secondly, we work to ensure the farmers who grow our coffee benefit from our purchases. We go above and beyond, ensuring that our farmers receive prices that will not only benefit the farmers and their communities, but also reflect the production of exceptional quality coffee.
Lastly, we take it a step further by directly asking the questions we (and you) want answers to. Jim’s conducts a Sustainability Survey sent to our farmers, exporters, and importers that is updated as needed. This extensive questionnaire covers aspects such as organic certification, worker conditions and wages, wildlife conservation, community projects, waste management, and overall quality of coffee. By sending our Sustainability Survey, we are verifying that all parties are doing their part to align with our ethical standards and ensuring the well-being of all stakeholders in our supply chain.
Jim’s Notes: Call it fair trade, call it ethical sourcing, call it socially responsible free trade, we just call it the way we do business.
Origin Community Impact
At Jim’s Organic Coffee, we have always supported ways to improve the lives of coffee farmers in and around areas where our coffee is grown. While our daily business of buying, roasting and selling the finest organic coffees does in fact improve farmers’ conditions, we go beyond this by partnering with small charities to support children’s educational and community development projects in coffee-producing countries. Organic IS non-GMO
By definition, certified all-organic products are non-GMO. We believe that choosing all-organic coffee and other agricultural products can be the healthiest way to live.
Shade Grown
Jim’s Organic Coffee is all shade grown, an organic farming method that promotes biodiversity & protects rainforests. Unlike sungrown coffee plantations on deforested land, our coffee beans are sourced from “agroforest” farms abundant in plant life, providing nutrients to the soil and habitats for various species, including birds. The farms we support feature a minimum of 30 different tree species and some are even Smithsonian Bird Friendly certified. There are many benefits to shade grown coffee:
- Limits the sun’s heat and drying effects on the topsoil and coffee cherries
- Allows for biodiverse shade, ranging from banana, mango & orange to old-growth trees. Varying layers of flora drop each year, eventually composting into the soil
- Provides better habitats for birds in and around the farm. The birds in turn help to combat pests, creating a natural insect-controlled environment.
Small Batch Roasted
ALL-Organic Independent Roaster
Quality is at the heart of what we do. Our roaster, a Probat G240, produces between 100-250 pounds per batch. It’s a modern system equipped with a multitude of quality checkpoints, ensuring that each batch is roasted to perfection. Behind the operation, we have a dedicated team of three highly skilled artisan roasters.
Since its founding in 1996, Jim’s Organic Coffee has been 100% dedicated to crafting certified organic coffee. Jim Cannell, the founder, and current CEO has been able to grow the business without the influence of external capital. This independence has granted us the freedom to pursue our passion for producing exceptional coffee without compromising on our organic values. The introduction of a new generation of coffee-loving Cannells into the company has added yet another chapter to our story.
Certified B-Corp
Jim’s Organic Coffee is B-Corp Certified, which recognizes us as a company that uses the power of business to solve social and environmental problems. A few examples:
- All of the energy in our office and roasting plant comes from renewable sources, including 100% wind for our electricity. This is done using offsets.
- We were the very first company to introduce renewable resources into our one-way valve coffee bags.
- We make our coffee ‘chaff’, a roasting by-product, available for free to local farms (many organic!). The soil this produces is incredibly rich and fantastic for veggies and flowers and is a great way to complete the cycle.
From farm. To roast. To brew.
We call it coffee with character. And we hope you like it as much as we do. Shop Now
